Few posters from the First World War speak as directly to clerks and accountants as this one does. The U.S. Army Finance Department used "Soldiers of Finance" to recruit men for the paperwork behind the war effort, the pay rolls, ledgers and bond accounts that kept the Army supplied and paid. The Liberty Bonds promoted on the same board were sold to finance the war, and the Finance Department handled much of the bookkeeping that made that borrowing possible. The poster shows how the government framed clerical service as patriotic duty, an effort to bring the same loyalty to the desk that soldiers gave in the field.
