This poster pairs a plea to the home front with an image of armored tanks and soldiers going over the top, a combination that ties grocery shopping to the fighting in France. The slogan "Food Will Win the War" was a central message of the U.S. Food Administration, the agency Herbert Hoover led after Congress created it in August 1917. Its campaigns asked Americans to save wheat, meat, sugar, and fats so that food could be sent to Allied troops and civilians in Europe. Posters like this one were displayed in shops, schools, and public buildings to encourage voluntary rationing during the First World War.
