Few maps of Chicago show the city's parks and boulevards alongside the district destroyed by fire, which makes this one a record of two things at once. The Great Chicago Fire of October 1871 consumed much of the downtown and nearby neighborhoods, leaving tens of thousands of residents without homes. This picture reproduces a drawing by the Chicago firm Colbert & Chamberlain and appeared as an illustration in the book *Chicago and the Great Conflagration*. The caption card records no date, so it is best read as a document of the city as it was described in the years after the fire.
