This glass negative, dated May 28, 1924, carries the name "Jno. O. Belles" on its sleeve, though the Library of Congress notes that the title is unverified and part of the original caption has rubbed away. It belongs to the National Photo Company Collection, made by a Washington, D.C., studio that photographed city life, public figures, and events from about 1906 to 1936. The plate was a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947. Its streaks and blemishes come from the natural breakdown of the original emulsion, so the image is softer and more mottled than a print from the same session would be.
