Few wartime recruiting appeals were as blunt as this one, which asks the viewer outright why he is not fighting while his friends are. Issued in 1917 under the sponsorship of the Central Recruiting Committee in Canada, it is a color lithograph built to shame men into joining the Canadian Expeditionary Force. Voluntary enlistment had slowed considerably by then, and the government passed the Military Service Act later that year to introduce conscription. The poster's appeal to comradeship shows how heavily recruiters relied on peer pressure at that stage of the war.
