A cartoon printed on an envelope, this piece turns on the title, "A Horse Marine" of the C.S.A. The phrase described a soldier or sailor out of his element, much like a man on horseback aboard a ship, and the horse is the visual joke. The date, given in brackets as an estimate, places it in 1861, the first year of the Confederate States of America, when its army and navy were still being organized. The caption tracings classify it as a political cartoon about the Confederacy, so it reads as mockery of Southern military pretensions at the start of the war, a theme that appeared often in satirical prints of the period.
