The bloodied hand at the center of this 1917 lithograph, under the heading "The Hun - His mark," shows the wartime use of the German "Hun" label to stir up anger against the enemy. Illustrator J. Allen St. John, best known later for his book covers, designed the poster to urge Americans to "blot it out" by buying Liberty Bonds. The United States entered the First World War in April 1917, and the government financed its war effort through a series of Liberty Loan drives that relied heavily on posters like this one. Its mix of bold color and emotional imagery shows how war bonds were marketed as a personal duty.
