Bryan and Sewall appear here as a pair, the Democratic ticket of 1896, when Bryan, then 36, won his party's presidential nomination on the strength of his "Cross of Gold" speech and Sewall, a Maine shipbuilder, was chosen as his running mate. The color lithograph comes from N.A. Throop & Co. of Chicago, a firm known for making transparencies, the backlit images used in window displays and campaign parades. Its small, head-and-shoulders format suggests a campaign piece meant to be widely reproduced and easily recognized.
