This campaign lithograph pairs two men on one ticket: Winfield Scott Hancock, the Democratic presidential nominee, and William H. English, his running mate. Hancock was a Union general whose stand at Gettysburg earned him lasting fame, and his military record was the centerpiece of his 1880 candidacy. English, a former Indiana congressman, balanced the ticket geographically. Printed portraits like these were widely distributed during campaigns, when voters had few other ways to see a candidate's face.
