Rather than a single scene, this piece pairs portraits of the men who signed the Declaration of Independence with samples of their handwriting. Fifty-six delegates to the Continental Congress put their names to the document, and John Hancock's large, bold signature is the one most people still recall. Many of the portraits were made or copied decades after 1776, so groupings like this were often assembled as both a historical record and a keepsake. Seen together, the faces and signatures show how the founders wished to be remembered by later generations.
