The Declaration of Independence, adopted by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776, was first circulated in print as a broadside, a single sheet meant to be posted and read aloud in public. Printed copies like this one carried the signers' names, which were added in the following weeks and months as delegates signed the engrossed parchment. Broadsides of this kind spread the text to towns and army camps across the colonies, where it was often read to crowds and sometimes to troops. Notice how the wide sheet and the list of names were designed to be read at a glance from a distance.
