This print pairs the roll of American presidents with the Declaration of Independence, linking the nation's executive line back to the document that began it. The Continental Congress adopted the Declaration on July 4, 1776, and Thomas Jefferson drafted most of its text. Its claim that all men are created equal and its grievances against the British Crown became touchstones for later generations, and the presidents who followed George Washington were expected to uphold its principles. Printed images that set the two together were a popular way of expressing civic pride and national continuity.
