This drawing shows the side elevation of one entry in the competition for a memorial to Wilbur and Orville Wright, the brothers who made the first sustained powered flights at Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina. Side elevations let jurors judge a design's height, proportions, and silhouette without perspective, which matters for a tall, vertical monument meant to be seen from across open dunes. Its tapering column form links it to the tower shapes gathered on this board. Memorial competitions of this era often drew many entries, and the drawings that survive show how architects translated commemorative ideas into stone.
