Few aerial views from the 1930s capture New York Harbor as completely as this one, which was taken from the air in early November 1934 by Fairchild Aerial Surveys, a firm that mapped and photographed American cities and coastlines from low-flying planes. The harbor was then the busiest port on the East Coast, with its piers, ferry slips and shipping lanes spread across the water between Manhattan, Brooklyn, New Jersey and Staten Island. Fairchild's survey work was valued for its detail, and images like this one were used by planners, engineers and government agencies to study the waterfront. The record's details are based on an old caption card and have not been independently verified.
