Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, in 1882 was a small town in Walworth County whose economy was shifting from farming toward summer tourism. Rail connections to Chicago had put the lake within a day's travel of the city, and hotels, boarding houses and summer cottages were multiplying along its shore. Steamboats carried visitors from landing to landing across the water, and the resort trade drew Chicago families who built lakeside homes. Residents still depended on the surrounding dairy and grain farms, with their mills, markets and shops, while the growing number of visitors changed the town's streets and waterfront. The 1882 view captures both the working town and the resort it was becoming.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, drawn in 1882. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
