Madison, Wisconsin, in 1867 was a young state capital sitting on an isthmus between Lake Mendota and Lake Monona. The state had joined the Union in 1848, and the capitol, the university, and the courthouse made the town a center of government and learning more than of heavy industry. Railroads had reached the city in the 1850s, linking it to Milwaukee and the farm country to the south, and that connection shaped its trade in grain, livestock, and goods. German and Norwegian immigrants were settling across the surrounding counties, and many of them came into town to buy, sell, and worship. Residents who lived there in 1867 would have known the place first as the seat of state politics, with the lakes and the capitol dome as its most familiar landmarks.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Madison, Wisconsin, drawn in 1867. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
