Jefferson, Wisconsin, in 1870 was the seat of Jefferson County, a farming district on the Rock River in the southeastern part of the state. Its growth depended on the river's waterpower, which ran the grist and sawmills, and on the railroad that linked the town to larger markets. Wheat was the main crop of the surrounding countryside at the time, and farmers were just beginning the move toward dairying that would reshape the county over the following decade. County offices, courts, and churches made the courthouse square the center of town life, and residents would have known Jefferson first as a market town where farm families came to sell grain, buy goods, and settle legal business.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Jefferson, Wisconsin, drawn in 1870. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
