In 1870 Fort Atkinson was a small farming and milling town of Jefferson County, sitting on the Rock River in southeastern Wisconsin, about fifty miles west of Milwaukee. Its name recalled General Henry Atkinson, the army officer whose campaigns had opened the region to settlers in the 1830s. The river's fall supplied waterpower for sawmills, grist mills, and small shops, and farm families brought their grain and livestock into town to sell and trade. Wisconsin had been a state for only about two decades, and local life centered on churches, schools, the courthouse-town routines of county business, and the seasonal rhythms of planting and harvest. A view drawn at this moment shows a town still organized around the river and its mills, before the dairy industry that later made the area famous had fully taken hold.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin, drawn in 1870. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
