Prairie du Chien sat on a bluff-lined bend of the Mississippi in 1870, a town whose European past reached back to French fur traders who set up a post there in the late seventeenth century. Its economy still depended largely on river steamboats carrying grain, lumber and merchandise along the Mississippi and up the Wisconsin River, and on rail links to the east that were tying the town to larger markets. Fort Crawford, the army post on the edge of town, had lost its frontier purpose after the troops left in 1856, but residents still recalled the Black Hawk War of 1832 and the soldiers who had passed through. To people living there in 1870, Prairie du Chien was one of the oldest settled communities in Wisconsin, a river town adjusting to the railroad age.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, drawn in 1870. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives. Reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress collections. Printed to order on archival paper. Free shipping on all US orders.
