Hudson, Wisconsin, in 1870 was a river town on the St. Croix, where the lumber trade set the pace of daily life. Logs cut in the pine forests upstream were floated down the St. Croix in rafts, and sawmills and lumber yards along the bank turned them into boards for the settling prairies to the south and west. Steamboats and the river shaped the town's commerce as much as any road did, and the St. Croix's shoreline held the mills, warehouses, and landings that gave the place its work. Across the river lay Minnesota, and the two shores were closely tied by trade and travel. Residents of the period would have known Hudson first as a lumber and river community, one whose fortunes rose and fell with the logging seasons.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Hudson, Wisconsin, drawn in 1870. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
