The poster's German text, "Helft!" ("Help!") and "eile tut not!" ("haste is needed"), makes its appeal plain: it asks Berliners to support aid for soldiers coming home at the end of the war. In 1918, Germany's armies were demobilizing in disorder as the war ended and the imperial government collapsed, and millions of men returned to shortages, unemployment, and uncertainty. Charitable campaigns like this one reflected the strain on families and relief groups in the capital. The poster's subject is despair, and its bold color lithography was meant to catch the eye of passersby on city streets.
