Leaving the firehouse captures the instant a company rushes out to answer an alarm, a scene repeated many times a day in American cities of the 1890s. Before motorized apparatus, horses were kept beside the engines and trained to be harnessed in seconds, so the departure was often as dramatic as the fire itself. The record gives a date of February 1, 1895, and a Copyright Office reference, which suggests the image was registered as a popular subject. The Thomas & Wylie name on the shelflist card is unverified.
