Louise Brooks, the silent-film actress known for her sleek bob and magnetic screen presence, is the named subject of this glass negative. The plate belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied photographs of celebrities, politicians and news events to newspapers from the early 1900s into the early 1930s. The record gives no date, and the identification rests on caption information the agency wrote down, so the exact sitting remains unverified. Brooks's peak came in Hollywood and in German films such as *Pandora's Box* (1929), and portraits from this period show how studios and press photographers helped shape the image of the 1920s flapper.
