Pauline Frederick was a stage and screen actress whose career spanned the early 1900s, when she moved from Broadway to silent films and became one of the better-known stars of her day. This glass negative comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress, the archive of the Bain News Service, a New York photo agency that supplied newspapers with pictures of celebrities, politicians and news events from about 1900 to 1920. The record gives the title as unverified, so the exact occasion and date of the portrait are not documented. Bain's studio work of this period is valued for capturing performers of the stage and early film in a fast-moving commercial setting.
