Elmer Rice, the playwright behind "The Adding Machine" and "Street Scene," is the figure this glass negative is catalogued under, though the record itself gives no date and only a Bain News Service caption as its source for the name. The George Grantham Bain Collection holds thousands of such negatives, made by a New York news photography agency that supplied pictures of public figures, theater people and current events to newspapers in the early twentieth century. Rice's work was then reshaping American stage drama with expressionist techniques, and the agency's portraits of artists like him offer a useful window onto how the press packaged celebrity in that era.
