This glass negative is a portrait of Charles H. Herty, the chemist whose work on southern pine turned a traditional turpentine trade into a subject of scientific study. Herty taught chemistry and directed research at the University of Georgia, and he is best remembered for promoting the "Herty cup," a small container that let tappers collect pine resin more cleanly than older methods allowed. The Bain News Service, a New York press agency, made pictures like this one to supply newspapers with images of people in the news. The record gives no date, and the name comes from the agency's own caption data, so it is worth treating the identification as likely rather than fully confirmed.
