The only identifying detail for this glass negative is its title, "P.A. Jay," which the Bain News Service recorded on the negative or its caption card. The record does not say whom or what the initials name. George Grantham Bain founded the Bain News Service in New York around 1899 to sell news photographs to newspapers, and its glass plates from the early twentieth century now form a large part of the Library of Congress holdings. With no date given, the image is best read as a trace of that commercial trade, where a name on a caption card was often the only record of its subject.
