Tex Rickard, the Texas-born promoter who built Madison Square Garden and staged some of the biggest prize fights of the 1920s, is the subject of this glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection. Bain News Service, a New York photo agency, produced and distributed pictures like this to newspapers across the country, and its files are a major record of sports, theater and public life in the early twentieth century. The record gives no date, so the exact occasion is unknown, but portraits of Rickard from this period typically tie to his boxing promotions and the crowds and headlines they drew. The plate is worth a look as a document of how the agency framed its celebrity subjects for the press.
