The subject here is a Navy Loening amphibian, a flying boat that could take off from and land on water or on a prepared runway, which made it useful for coastal patrol and reconnaissance. Designer Grover Loening built his amphibians in New York, and versions of the type served with the U.S. Navy in the 1920s. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, the glass-negative files of the Bain News Service, a wire photo agency that supplied newspapers with news pictures in the early twentieth century. The record gives no exact date, so the image is best read as a snapshot of early naval aviation and the period when seaplanes were still a central part of its work.
