The record names the sitter as Dr. Cecil H. Desch, though the Bain News Service's own title is marked as unverified, so that identification deserves some caution. Desch was a British metallurgist whose work on metals and alloys drew wide attention in the early twentieth century, when industry and government were relying more heavily on scientific expertise. The Bain agency made glass negatives like this one to supply newspapers with images of newsworthy people, so portraits of professionals such as scientists were often taken to accompany stories or to be kept on file for later use.
