The name on this glass negative, Chevalier De Martino, comes from a title the Bain News Service recorded on the negative or its caption card, and the Library of Congress notes that the identification is unverified. That uncertainty is worth keeping in mind, since the agency produced a large volume of news pictures for newspapers and its staff sometimes recorded names quickly or imperfectly. George Grantham Bain founded the service in New York in the early twentieth century, and its glass plates document people, events and street life from that busy period.
