The label is named for Ariel, the airy spirit in Shakespeare's *The Tempest*, a choice that suggested lightness and refinement to buyers. Its record lists women and bats among its subjects, a pairing of figures that was common in the fanciful imagery of the period. Color lithography made tobacco package labels like this one inexpensive to reproduce in quantity, and the bright, decorative designs were meant to catch the eye on a shop counter. The copyright credit to Lichtenstein Bros. & Co. marks it as a commercial design that was protected from copying.
