Titled "As You Like It," this color lithograph pairs children with insects, an unusually whimsical subject for a tobacco label. The name borrows from Shakespeare's comedy, a common tactic for brands that wanted to seem cultured and familiar to buyers. Hatch & Co. of New York issued the label around 1869, when manufacturers competed for shelf space with bright chromolithographs pasted onto packages. The copyright notice in the name of Martin & Johnson shows the design was registered as an original work, which helps explain its storybook character.
