Elgin, on the Fox River in Kane County, Illinois, was a manufacturing town in 1880, and its best-known enterprise was the Elgin National Watch Company, founded in 1864, whose factory produced railroad-grade pocket watches sold across the country. The watch works earned the city its nickname, "Watch City," and drew skilled machinists and their families into a community that also relied on dairy processing at Gail Borden's condensed milk plant. Rail lines through town carried finished goods to Chicago, about 40 miles southeast, and brought in workers and freight. A state hospital for the insane, opened there in 1872, added a large public institution to local life. Residents in 1880 knew Elgin for its watches, its river mills, and its growing brick streets and churches.
