Rockford, Illinois, in 1880 was a river city of roughly 11,000 people, built along the Rock River about ninety miles west of Chicago. Its reputation rested on manufacturing, especially lumber, furniture, and woodworking, which earned it the nickname "Forest City." Swedish immigrants made up a large part of the population, and their churches, shops, and mutual aid societies shaped daily life on the east side. Railroad lines carried Rockford's goods to Chicago and the wider Midwest, and the mills and factories along the river gave the town its working character. A panoramic view of the town captured these streets and factories as residents knew them at the close of the 1870s.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Rockford, Illinois, drawn in 1880. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
