Rockford, Illinois, in 1891 was a Rock River manufacturing city that had grown steadily through the 1880s, drawing workers from the farms of Winnebago County and beyond. The Rockford Watch Company, founded in the early 1870s, was building a reputation for timepieces alongside the older woodworking and furniture trades. The Rockford Female Seminary, which had operated since 1847, drew young women from across the region to its campus. The streets, churches, and river crossings on the map were the daily routes of a city split between its east and west banks, and city council debates in these years often focused on paving, water service, and street lighting as the population expanded.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Rockford, Illinois, drawn in 1891. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
