Mount Vernon, the seat of Jefferson County in southern Illinois, was in 1881 a farm trade and railroad town on the Ohio and Mississippi line. Its economy rested on grain, livestock, and the coal and timber of the surrounding countryside, and merchants depended on the depot to move produce to larger markets. The county courthouse made the town the center of local politics and legal affairs. Residents knew it as a steady market town in the part of Illinois that southern Illinoisans called Egypt, and churches, lodges, and schools shaped daily life as the population grew.
