In 1874 Rock Island, Illinois, was still feeling the effects of the Panic of 1873, a financial collapse that cut orders at factories and froze building across the country. The town's economy rested on the Rock Island Arsenal, whose federal payroll and workshops kept many households steady, and on the Rock Island Plow Company, which had been turning out farm tools since 1865. Steamboats still tied up along the Mississippi, and rail freight moved goods inland from the riverfront. Residents would have known the town as a working place of mills, shops, and river landings, where the depression was a daily concern for families who depended on wages and credit.

| Notes | An original bird's-eye view map of Rock Island, Illinois, drawn in 1874. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
