Shelbyville, the seat of Shelby County in central Illinois, was in 1869 a farm trading town at the edge of the prairie, where grain, livestock, and hogs moved out by wagon and by rail. The Civil War had ended only a few years earlier, and the postwar decade brought new businesses, schools, and churches to courthouse-square streets. Local residents measured their town's prospects by the arrival of railroad lines, which could carry produce to larger markets and bring in merchandise and settlers. This bird's-eye view, drawn by A. Ruger, shows the town as its boosters wanted it seen: laid out in neat blocks, with its public buildings and the homes of its leading families set among the trees.
