Young America, Illinois, was a small farming community in 1869, when this bird's-eye view was drawn by the Chicago firm Ruger & Stoner. Like many towns across northern and central Illinois, its fortunes rested on corn, wheat, and livestock, with grain moving out by wagon to the nearest depot. The decade after the Civil War brought new rail lines and steady settlement to the prairie, and the transcontinental railroad, completed in May of that year, drew national attention to the Midwest's farm output. Residents would have measured their town by its churches, schools, stores, and rail connections, and by how far those links reached toward Chicago's markets.
