A mirror-image daguerreotype of the southwest entrance to Independence Square in Philadelphia, the grounds beside the State House where the Declaration of Independence was adopted in 1776. Made sometime between 1840 and 1856, it shows two men identified in the record as James Peale and Augustus Runyon Peale, members of the Philadelphia family of painters and museum keepers founded by Charles Willson Peale. Because daguerreotypes reverse the scene, the entrance appears flipped from how passersby saw it. Early views of the square like this one are prized as records of its appearance in the 1840s and 1850s.
