Few prints of Washington pair an engraved scene with the words he actually spoke, but this one does both. The mezzotint, engraved on steel by H.S. Sadd, reproduces T.H. Matteson's painting of Washington delivering his inaugural address in April 1789 at the Old City Hall in New York, and the speech is printed in letterpress beside it. Published by John Neale, the image turns a moment of a new national government into a public spectacle. The building, later known as Federal Hall, was then the seat of Congress, which ties the scene to the first months of the republic.
