This engraving reproduces a painting by Thomas Hicks, a Pennsylvania artist known for his portraits, with the plate cut by H. Wright Smith. Its c. 1850s date places it in a period when printed likenesses of George Washington were especially popular. Such engravings hung in parlors, schoolrooms and public halls, and they offered a shared image of the first president as a symbol of union at a time when the country was deeply divided over slavery and sectional politics. Viewers today can compare the engraver's linework with the tonal range of the original painting, which is part of what makes these prints interesting to study.
