A newspaper seller stands distracted in this French cartoon, his stock forgotten because a woman has caught his eye. The caption, "Oh boy! If I had a woman like you I wouldn't sell newspapers anymore!", is a playful joke about flirtation, and the drawing is signed by Jacques Villon and dated 1904. Villon, who later became a leading figure in Cubism, was then producing humorous illustrations for French periodicals, and this sheet shows his early skill with quick ink line and loose gray wash. Street vendors were a familiar subject in the illustrated press of the period.
