Unlike the many Army and Navy calls of its day, this poster makes the Marine Corps itself the one doing the asking, under the direct slogan "The U.S. Marines want you." It was printed as a color halftone sometime between 1914 and 1918, a period that includes the United States' entry into World War I in April 1917, when the Corps expanded rapidly to meet wartime needs. Its pointed, personal appeal echoes the style of James Montgomery Flagg's well-known Uncle Sam poster, and it shows how recruiters across the services competed for the same young men.
