Howard Chandler Christy, best known for his idealized American women, turned that style to recruiting with this 1915 color poster, which pairs a glamorous female figure with the blunt line "If you want to fight! Join the Marines." The image was issued while the United States was still neutral, as war raged in Europe, and the Marine Corps was working to expand its ranks. Christy's posters of this kind drew on the public's fascination with his women to catch the eye of passersby, and posters like this one were a common sight in post offices and recruiting stations during the 1910s.
