Thomas W. Keene's name and the play's title dominate this color lithograph, which promoted the American actor in *Hamlet*, one of the most demanding roles in the stage repertoire. Keene built his reputation on Shakespeare during the 1880s, touring American theaters and becoming especially known for his Richard III. Posters like this were printed in quantity and pasted up ahead of a company's arrival, so they show how traveling stars were marketed to local audiences. The c1884 date comes from an old catalog card and has not been independently confirmed.
