Photographer Napoleon Sarony, a New York studio artist known for his theatrical portraits, made this studio portrait of the English actress Lillie Langtry, whose American tour began in 1882 and drew large crowds and heavy press attention. Born on the island of Jersey, she was nicknamed the "Jersey Lily" and was already a well-known society figure in London before she performed in the United States. The caption card files the picture under clothing and fashions, which makes it a useful record of how stage celebrities of the early 1880s used dress and pose to present themselves to the public.
