Born on the island of Jersey in 1853, Lillie Langtry was called the "Jersey Lily" long before she became a professional actress, and by the late 1880s she was among the most photographed women in Britain and America. The caption card, though its details are unverified, links this portrait to a production of Shakespeare's *Macbeth* and to fashion, which suits a career that moved from London society into the theater in 1881 and then onto American tours. Studio portraits like this were sold in large numbers, so they show how an actress's public image was built as much through photographs as through the stage.
