Lillie Langtry, born on the island of Jersey in 1853, was one of the most photographed women of the late Victorian era, and this 1912 print shows her later in life, when she had turned from the London stage to American theater and life in California. The caption card's subject tags point to hats, dress, and jewelry, so the picture likely records the fashions of its moment as much as the sitter herself. Langtry's fame rested on her looks, her stage career, and her friendship with the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII. The record's details are unverified, so the exact occasion is uncertain.
